The Bioinformatics Institute (BII) is a member of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Biomedical Sciences Institutes in Singapore. As a national research and postgraduate training institute in computational biology, the BII focuses on theoretical approaches aimed at understanding biomolecular mechanisms that underlie biological phenomena, the development of computational methods to support this discovery process, and experimental verification of predicted molecular and cellular functions of genes and proteins with biochemical methods.

 Postdoctoral Fellow in High-throughput and Systems Toxicology

A postdoctoral research fellow position in the area of high-throughput and systems toxicology is available in the Loo lab at the Bioinformatics Institute (BII), A*STAR, Singapore. The group is interested in studying chemical-induced toxicity using quantitative data modeling and cellular imaging methods. The group has recently developed the first high-throughput cellular imaging and computational platform for predicting kidney toxicity.

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team that develops novel in vitro and computational models for predicting the toxicity of food ingredients, industrial chemicals, environmental pollutants, and drugs. He/she will develop new in vitro human cell-based assays to study the modes-of-action of toxic chemicals using high-throughput imaging-based phenotypic profiling, RNA sequencing, mass spectrometry, and other molecular biology techniques. The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a highly stimulating environment, and participate in a global effort to develop next-generation and animal-free technologies for chemical safety assessment.

Requirements:
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in either pharmacology/pharmacy, toxicology, molecular and cell biology, systems biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or other related fields. Previous experience in working with human cells, studying drug/chemical responses, molecular biology experiments, and immunofluorescence microscopy are required. Candidates with previous experience in high-throughput screening, gene expression profiling, or developing in vitro cellular models/assays are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates must also possess good communication skills, be fluent in both spoken and written English, and able to work independently.

 Software Engineer (Big Data Analytics)

A Software Engineer position in the area of big data analytics is available in the Complex Cellular Phenotype Analysis Group at the Bioinformatics Institute (BII), Agency for Science and Technology Research (A*STAR).

The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team that develops novel computational models for predicting the toxicity of drugs, food ingredients, industrial chemicals, and environmental pollutants.

He/she will design and develop software packages and web interfaces for analyzing, modeling, and visualizing the big data generated from large-scale cellular imaging experiments. The work will involve programming, software and user interface design, algorithm implementation, software profiling and testing, and database administration. The candidate will have the opportunity to work in a highly stimulating scientific research environment, and participate the development of next-generation computational technologies for toxicity testing.

Requirements:

  1. MSc or BSc in computer science, computer engineering, statistics, or other related engineering disciplines
  2. Must be proficient in either C++, R, or PHP programming; and familiar with HTML/CSS, SQL, and the Linux operating system
  3. Ideally, candidate should have at least 2-3 years working experience in software engineering or development, but fresh graduates with relevant experience are also welcome to apply
  4. Past experience in machine learning, statistics, image processing, or bioinformatics is highly desirable, but not required
  5. Strong problem-solving skills, and able to work independently

 Echocardiography Intern

The Computer Vision and Pattern Discovery group of BII is hiring interns to work in the exciting field of Echocardiography. We are looking for enthusiastic polytechnic or undergraduate students who are seeking to improve their knowledge in the cross disciplinary area between artificial intelligence and echocardiography.

As this project is with an international collaboration, interns get to work with top computer scientists, cardiologist and echocardiograpers around the world. We are also seeking for top performing interns to work with us on longer term contracts after their internship with us.

Commencement: As soon as possible

Duration: 3-6 months

Requirements :
There are no technical prerequisites except that students should be from a polytechnic or university undergraduates, students will learn on the job. Essentially, our interns will need to draw outlines of the heart chambers on ultrasound heart images. At the end of the project, interns will already understand how the heart pumps, what are different parts of the heart and what kinds of heart disease there are.
