Principles Governing Biological Processes: Applications to drug design and drug target

Our research is centered upon elucidating the key physicochemical principles underlying complex biological systems, notably those governing interactions between inorganic or organic cofactors and biomolecules. These principles are then used to (i) guide the design of potential therapeutic molecules, (ii) identify novel drug targets, (iii) elucidate the mechanisms of drug action, and (iv) develop new methods. This talk will provide a brief overview of our research interests and examples of how our studies help to unravel the principles governing the role of Zn in proteins and the reactivity of Zn-bound cysteines and how they help to guide drug design and identify novel drug targets.

About The Speaker
Carmay Lim obtained her Ph.D. degree in Chemical Physics from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1984. After carrying out postdoctoral research at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill and at Harvard University, she joined the faculties of the Departments of Medical Genetics, Biochemistry, and Chemistry at the University of Toronto. In 1995, she moved to the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica in Taiwan where she is currently Distinguished Research Fellow. She is also Adjunct Professor at the chemistry department in National Tsing Hua University. Her research interests include (1) unraveling the principles governing biological processes and applying them to guide drug design and identify new drug targets, and (2) developing new computational techniques/algorithms for studying macromolecular interactions. She has received several awards including the National Science Council Outstanding Scientist Award (國科會傑出研究獎), the Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship Outstanding Scholar Award(傑出人才基金會講), and the Ministry of Education Academic Award (教育部學術獎). She has served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of American Chemical Society and is currently on the Editorial Advisory Board of several journals including the Journal of Physical Chemistry B and Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling.
