A*STAR Awards 2008

The A*STAR Awards are part of the initiative to celebrate A*STAR values - Action, Speed, Teamwork, Resolve, Agility, and Integrity. This year, 2 awards - the STAR Innovation Award and the GEMS Award - were presented to the staff from BII.

STAR Innovation Award 2008 - Web Services team, Bioinformatics Institute

We would like to congratulate the Web Services team from the Bioinformatics Institute (BII) for being awarded the STAR Innovation Award at the recent Corporate Planning Seminar 2008. This award is given to outstanding individuals or teams whose ideas have resulted in substantial cost savings for A*STAR. The team, headed by Mr Zhuo Shaowei, is the only recipient of the STAR Innovation Award this year.

On top of servicing the internal research groups within BII, the Web Services team has also introduced an extensive and well structured resource sharing process, allowing for the extension of their services to external parties.

Various Biomedical Research Institutes, research units and consortiums within A*STAR are able to tap on their expertise in the areas of web and application development, web hosting and graphics design and consultancy. The "in-house" development of customised web-base applications has enabled the various entities to establish and maintain an active and updated Internet presence. The collaborative efforts between the respective units and the Web Services team have allowed for estimated cost savings amounting to $143,420.

"The IT Web Services team has been doing a wonderful job in providing relentless efforts and time in advising, project planning, designing and maintaining all the important websites for BII and the Biomedical Research Institutes of A*STAR.

They provide a central point of contact for customers, give advice and guidance, and ensure that standardised methods are used for efficient and prompt handling of all changes..."

GEMS Award 2008 - Ms. Felicia Ng, Bioinformatics Institute

We would also like to congratulate our fellow staff, Ms Felicia Ng, for winning the A*STAR GEMS Award 2008. The "Go the Extra Mile for Service" (GEMS) Award is given to staff who have demonstrated exemplary service or who are active participants of quality and skills improvement activities. Up to four awards are given out each year, and winners will be nominated for the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) GEMS Award.

Felicia, a Research Associate with Dr. Vivek Tanavde's group in the Bioinformatics Institute, has consistently helped staff from other RIs within A*STAR and even to scientists from overseas institutions to carry out their microarray data analysis. In many cases, the expertise and help she has provided is in addition to the core research projects of the group, going well beyond the normal call of duty.

"... In my opinion, Felicia went beyond the normal call of duty to ensure that this project was successful."

- Dr. Vivek Tanavde, Principal Investigator, Bioinformatics Institute
